Positive and Negative Ions - and Your Health

The Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, physicist and mechanical engineer, Nikola Tesla (1856 - 1943) is regarded as one of the most accomplished scientists of the late 19th and early 20th century. Tesla experimented extensively with electromagnetic flux and studied the earth's gravitational field. His years of theoretical work and patents serve as the basis of modern alternating current (AC) electric power systems, which helped bring about the Second Industrial Revolution.

During his research, Tesla uncovered the fact that atmospheric ionization is altered when the atmosphere is charged by radio wave transmissions in low frequency ranges (10 to 80 hertz). Tesla also discovered that manipulation of radio frequency could cause both positive and negative ionization of the atmosphere. Further studies indicated that with positive ionization, people and animals became tired and lethargic.

As reported by WebMd: "Negative ions are odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments. Think mountains, waterfalls, and beaches. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy."

Michael Terman, PhD, at Columbia University in New York is an ion researcher who says, "The action of the pounding surf creates negative air ions and we also see it immediately after spring thunderstorms when people report lightened moods."

Additional studies, done at Columbia University, of people with chronic and and winter depression, show that negative ion generators actually relieve depression as much as antidepressants. "The best part is that there are relatively no side effects, but we still need to figure out appropriate doses and which people it works best on," Terman says.

The ions that float about in the air and surround us all of the time and have either negative or positive charges. remarkable effects on both plants and animals can be caused by changes in ionic concentrations or in ratios of positively to negatively charged molecules.

It is estimated that there are normally 1,500 to 4,000 ions per cubic centimeter. Negative ions are exceedingly mobile and the Earth's surface has a negative charge; therefore, negative ions are repelled from the Earth. This repulsion creates a normal ratio of positive to negative ions in the range of twelve to ten. Normally, more positive than negative ions exist.
Positive Ion

Positive Ion: an electrically charged atom or group of atoms formed by the loss or gain of one or more electrons, as a cation (positive ion), which is created by electron loss and is attracted to the cathode in electrolysis, or as an anion. Natural forces that generate positive ions include radon gas, forest fires, decay of radioactive minerals, lightning and ultraviolet rays.

Negative Ion

Negative Ion: created by an electron gain and is attracted to the anode (terminal where current flows in from outside). The valence of an ion is equal to the number of electrons lost or gained and is indicated by a plus sign for cations and a minus sign for anions, thus: Na + , Cl-, Ca ++ , S = Negative ions are naturally generated by evaporating water.
